Trekking the Trail – Fundraising Opportunities with Chappy Joey Parnell

Looking for creative ways to raise funds and awareness for her chaplaincy service in North Queensland, Joey decided to start horse trekking. Having spent most of her childhood years on a cattle and grain property, Joey is no stranger to the harsh landscapes of the Australian outback, and says she dreamt up Trekking the Trail because it aligned with her giftings and her passions.

In June, Joey completed a 60km horse trek over 3 days and has raised just shy of $6,000 to fund her chaplaincy service. You can find out more about her journey here.

“I learnt quite a few things doing this fundraiser!” says Chappy Joey.

  1. Start planning early– at least 6 months out! Decisions and paperwork take twice as long as you expect, especially with committees like a P&C that meet monthly.
  2. Find someone you trust to collaborate with. Two brains are better than one, and it’ll improve your plans and processes.
  3. The saying a picture is worth a thousand words holds true, but a short, succinct video highlight with music casts an even wider net in today’s social media world.
  4. I enjoyed getting school staff involved in making videos, and hearing their perspective on the chaplaincy service. Remember, feedback helps you grow, improve and learn what is effective.
  5. Fundraise around an activity that aligns with your passions and interests. This keeps you motivated even when there is a lot to do.
  6. Lastly, back yourself. If you believe you are making a difference, and you’re telling your story with authenticity, people will come along for the ride to support your dreams and goals.

Thanks for sharing your creativity and wisdom, Joey, and all the best with your future fundraising endeavours!
