‘Things I Wish I Knew’ – Bev Saunders

Bev Saunders – Caboolture LCC Chairperson

After 10 years of faithful service to Caboolture Local Chaplaincy Committee, Bev Saunders has a great deal of knowledge in a number of roles and from this experience, she shares the following advice on building your LCC.

Recruitment for your LCC can be difficult with a number of roles that need to be filled such as Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.  One thing that Bev would suggest is to highly value the team members that you have and learn from them what you can while they are with you.  Members may come and go, but each one leaves a positive influence on the group.

“We had very active leadership from Michael, our former chairperson. He led us beautifully. We also received incredible guidance and support from Jenni Dobbin and Janet Stebbins, but regretfully we were not proactive LCC members.”

Bev has learnt that it’s really important to share the load and work alongside each other, support each other and use each other’s strengths to their fullest.  Be an active member.

“We were happy to be reliant on them (Michael, Janet and Jenni) and their amazing work. So when these great people are no longer around to make all of the leadership decisions, it can be tough if you haven’t made an effort to really learn from them.”

But as Bev points out, there is support when you need it the most.

“Look at the SU QLD Guidelines for what your role in the LCC is, so that you’re aware that there are guidelines for you to follow to be an effective LCC.”

Also, Bev suggests to look around you, and see what’s available in your area.  You will find support through many different networks if you are willing to ask.

“We’re very thankful for the ministers’ network in Caboolture and the support that they’ve given us.”

Chaplaincy in the Caboolture area has been thriving for decades, and continues to maintain its beneficial presence in Caboolture schools.  Despite the difficulties to recruit, the Caboolture LCC continues to push forward.  If you know someone who would like to be part of this LCC, please contact Bev on 5499 0294 (evenings).
